An Interesting Understanding In This Verse

John 15:12-13 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Verse 13 the definition of LIFE in the Greek; G5590 ψυχή psuchē psoo-khay’ From G5594; breath, that is, (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants.

This is reference to the spirit. Not actually laying down your physical life. We can see the difference in definitions of life in this next verse in the literal flesh sense.

John 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

Life in the Greek; G2222 ζωή zōē dzo-ay’ From G2198; life (literally or figuratively): – life (-time).

NOTE; Soul in the Greek occurs in the NT about 458 times and the definition is the same as in John 15:13 for the word LIFE. So this is a “spiritual” laying down of your life for your friends. Just think, now you don’t have take that bullet for your buddy.

BTW, Love in the Greek in John 15:12 means; G26 ἀγάπη agapē ag-ah’-pay From G25; love, that is, affection or benevolence.
