What Is Atonement?

Atonement

Rom 5:10-11 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Atonement from the Greek;

G2643 καταλλαγή From G2644; exchange (figuratively adjustment), that is, restoration to (the divine) favor: G2644 καταλλάσσω so From G2596 and G236; to change mutually, that is, (figuratively) to compound a difference:

Reconciled from the Greek;

G604 ἀποκαταλλάσσω From G575 and G2644; to reconcile fully: – reconcile. G575 ἀπό apo apo’ A primary particle; “off”, that is, away (from something near), in various senses (of place, time, or relation; literally or figuratively) In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.

Gal 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

Col 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Restoration is a return of something to a former, original, normal, or unimpaired condition. Restitution of something taken away or lost. (lost by means of birth in the flesh) Reconciled is to restore to friendship or harmony. To bring into agreement; make compatible or consistent.

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

1Pe 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

From this we can take away an understanding that we were with God as perfect souls prior to coming down to this earth. Free will allows a soul to do as one freely loves, either good or evil. Life is love, and love is your created-soul state.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

From the flesh we undergo a regeneration to live by way of our inner “created” self and not our “formed” flesh self. (Gen 1:27, 2:7)
